Toenail reconstruction is a great intervention for someone who has experienced visible trauma to a nail. It could be damaged in some way, discoloured or misshapen, and or is partially missing, or has a fungal nail infection. Unsightly nails can sometimes embarrass or bother people, so the possibility of having a nail reconstruction treatment is a very simple solution.

Here are some of the key benefits to having nail reconstruction:
Improved cosmetic appearance – a reconstructed nail can boost someone’s confidence, particularly if they may be going on holiday and will be wearing open-toed shoes etc. You can also apply nail polish!
- Flexible, strong and made for toes and foot use – ToeFlex is formulated and designed specifically for toes. It’s an incredibly strong, flexible and yet lightweight hybrid-gel system, making it more durable to use in footwear, unlike salon hard gels or acrylics which are not designed to cope with pressures on the toes and the type of movement and terrain that the foot is designed for.
- Offers protection of new nail growth – ToeFlex can act as a barrier, which protects the under-lying nail bed, or the remaining nail plate, from further trauma or damage. The natural nail underneath is able to grow while it’s in place and won’t restrict growth of the natural nail or damage it.
- It’s compatible with other treatments – Nail reconstruction is not a replacement for medical treatments, but ToeFlex can be applied while other treatments, such as topical antifungals, are being used.
- It’s formula has fewer harsh chemicals and is vegan – For those that have sensitive skin or nail areas, or prefer ethical options, ToeFlex is a great choice as it’s free of damaging acids or harsh chemicals and is also vegan.
- Comfort and wearability – It may provide comfort when wearing shoes compared to having a missing or damaged toenail. The formula is tailored to flex with movement, and the smooth surface can reduce friction that otherwise may be felt. This can mean less irritation and fewer issues with shoes or walking.
- It’s inexpressive and easily accessible – This is an affordable treatment that is accessible to most people. Only a trained FHP or podiatrist is able to offer these treatment and there is likely to be one near you!
So, a reconstructed nail offers a lot of benefits and pluses. What it’s important to know is that it’s not a permanent solution or quick fix. It will require regular maintenance, monitoring and possibly reapplication up to 6 week intervals.
For longer lasting application, the product needs to be attached to a nail anchorplate or a stable. If there is nothing to attach to, the prosthetic can be fixed to the skin, but the bond will be weaker and likely need reapplication at earlier intervals.
Any underlying condition or damage, whether it’s due to fungal infection, psoriasis or other nail disease, must be assessed and treated accordingly. This is why it’s important to consult a foot health professional, so that they can best support and ensure that the condition doesn’t worsen and or cause greater damage. Once again, it’s not a substitute for managing underlying disease. Regular checks are important, and the nail and nail bed should be monitored, and care must be taken with hygiene, footwear and nail products, but do avoid acetone polish removers.
So there you go! This treatment can offer many benefits; however, it does need regular maintenance. In a nutshell, the benefits are that it’s designed for toes so it strong and flexible, it offers a more natural appearance, improved comfort with a protective overlay, and is compatible with ongoing treatments. The longevity depends upon the underlying health of the toe and nail bed, as well as the quality of the application and the follow-up care.
